Chiesa di s. Antonio Abate o del purgatorio

Indirizzo

Via Vittorio Emanuele 14, Trecastagni

Linked to confraternal practices and the worship of the deceased, this church preserves a profound memory of popular spirituality and the historical events that have marked the area.

Rebuilt in 1701 following damage caused by the 1693 earthquake, this church was managed by the Confraternity of the Dead who, during the 19th century, oversaw an extensive renovation. The facade boasts an entrance made of lava stone, surmounted by a window, and a bell tower positioned on the left. The interior area, with a single rectangular nave, is less opulent than other local churches, following thefts that robbed several of its furnishings. Inside, you can admire an evocative wooden crucifix, attributable to the artistic tradition of Fra' Umile da Petralia, and a venerable statue of the Immaculate Conception. Restorations carried out by the Superintendency in 1997 restored the building to its original appearance, while revealing ancient tombs, unused since 1899.
